Servant-leader Dr. Donald Brown’s calling of more than thirty-five years has been that of conceptualizing, developing, and implementing comprehensive academic support programs aimed at student success. Dr. Brown is known for working directly with students and fostering collaborative relations between diverse sectors of university communities, both of which are fundamental to student satisfaction, retention, and graduation. Dr. Brown is especially proud of two honors that he has received from Boston College where he worked for 27 years. Since 2006, the University has presented the Dr. Donald Brown Award to “an outstanding senior who throughout their career has made extraordinary contributions to the Boston College community in ways that have benefited African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American (AHANA) students in areas of leadership, service, and academic development.” In 2013, one of Boston College’s preeminent student organizations decided to name its annual luncheon in Dr. Brown’s honor.
In addition to his work in higher education, Dr. Brown is also proud of his avocation—a program development specialist for youth—which has led to his directly establishing or playing a major role in founding youth organizations both on college campuses and in the larger community. Among these initiatives are the Benjamin Elijah Mays Mentoring Program and DIOP Program (Dedicated Individuals of the People), Concerned Black Men of Massachusetts Inc., Christian Soldiers, Inc., and Bridging Bridges. The common denominator shared by all of these programs is placing youth on a path to college through mentoring, ultimately resulting in successful lives.
In addition, Dr. Brown is highly adept in conducting diversity-training workshops, and he is a motivational speaker. He has conducted workshops and training for students, staff, and administrators and has spoken at conferences, community forums, and observances throughout the country.
Dr. Brown has a Doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Arts from Springfield College.
